Business Community Commends Department of Education’s Proposed Regulations to Strengthen NCLB Accountability

WASHINGTON, DC— The Business Coalition for Student Achievement (BCSA), representing business leaders from every sector of the U.S. economy, today commended the Department of Education and U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings on issuing proposed regulations to reinforce many of the key accountability provisions under the No Child Left Behind Act.

"While the business community continues to call on Congress to reauthorize NCLB this year, these regulations offer a positive step toward implementing many of the recommendations championed by BCSA," said Susan Traiman, director of Education and Workforce Policy for Business Roundtable and spokesperson for BCSA.

"Addressing accountability loopholes, improving high school graduation, and expanding access and information on supplemental educational services and public school choice have all been priorities for BCSA. We are very pleased to see the Department's effort to strengthen each of these areas as part of the proposed regulations," said Arthur J. Rothkopf, senior vice president and counselor to the president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. "These proposed reforms are critical if our nation is to continue to move forward on improving our nation's schools and toward ensuring that all students have the skills and education necessary to succeed."
